The ancient Somerset town of Yeovil, located on the main Roman road from Dorchester to the Fosse Way at Ilchester, has had a thriving market for over 1,000 years. The town’s population grew slowly for many centuries until the Industrial Revolution when Yeovil became a centre for the glove making industry. In the early 20th century the town was dominated by the defence industry, making it a target of German raids during the Second World War. In the 1980s, Yeovil was in the news over the Westland Affair, leading to the resignation of Michael Heseltine.
