Wokingham is situated in south-east Berkshire and has been a market town since 1219. Formerly, the town was called Oakingham, and the acorn with oak leaves is still the symbol for the town council. One of the main industries of the town was its bell foundry, which supplied many churches across the southern part of the country. Today local industry comprises mostly of software development, light engineering and service industries. Approximately 33 miles from London and 6.8 miles from Reading, Wokingham provides easy access to both cities, and in 2007 was named the number one place to live in a survey by Halifax Estate Agents.
