Woking is synonymous with one of the best known science fiction stories ever written. Published in 1898, H G Wells’ War Of The Worlds tells the tale of a Martian invasion of huge metal tripods that wreak havoc across the Earth, initially landing in Wells’ hometown Woking. You can visit a commemorative sculpture of a Wellsian Martian Tripod, near Horsell Common, the Martian’s initial landing site. The name Woking has also been used in another science fiction novel: The Meaning of Liff. Writer Douglas Adams used the name as a phase for “standing in the kitchen and wondering what you came in for”.
