When E.M. Forster wrote his famous novel Howard’s End he did so from his home here in Weybridge, Surrey. The town was even destroyed by Martians in H.G Well’s classic The World Of The Worlds. In fact the twelfth chapter of the book is called ‘What I saw in the destruction of Weybridge and Shepperton’. The town of Weybridge is very old, dating back to Saxon times; it is mentioned in the Doomsday book as being worth all of £4 and developed around a very basic crossing over the River Wey, from which it gets its name. There used to be a palace here called Oatlands Palace, built by Henry VIII in 1537, but since destroyed. He married fifth wife Catherine Howard here before having her beheaded.
