This Lancashire coastal town was created in 1927 when Thornton and its neighbour Cleveleys became Thornton-Cleveleys. Thornton can trace its roots back to a Roman fort where the Cala Gran caravan park is. Cleveleys on the other hand was developed during the 19th century as a seaside resort around a hotel built by Mr Cleveleys. With its wide sandy beach, promenade and stunning views over the Irish Sea, it became a popular alternative to Blackpool four miles up the coast. The bright lights and white-knuckle rides are only a tram ride away as the Blackpool to Fleetwood tram runs through the centre of Cleveleys.
