Situated on the River Wear, Sunderland was once known as the largest shipbuilding town in the world and had a 1500-year tradition of glassmaking. Sunderland’s most famous building is The Stadium of Light; built on the site of Wearmouth Colliery, its poetic-sounding name actually refers to a more prosaic miner’s lamp. As well as its premiership football club, Sunderland’s attractions include Souter Lighthouse, the world’s first electrically powered lighthouse, and Hylton Castle, a ruined 15th century castle with an interesting collection of shields with the coats of arms of the local nobility and gentry of the 1400’s.
