Every summer the local primary school children parade, wearing laurel garlands, for their Walking day. Walking Days are a tradition in the area, celebrating the founding of the Sunday school movement in 1784. The walks were seen as a way to get the children who worked under wretched conditions in factories six days a week to taste some freedom. Stockton Heath itself was once home to George Formby, one of Britain’s best-loved entertainers known for his virtuoso ukulele playing and near-the-knuckle lyrics - the BBC even banned one of his most successful songs, ‘When I’m Cleaning Windows’. One of Formby’s greatest fans, George Harrison wrote “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” in nearby Appleton.
