Near the River Ver sits the commuter town of St Albans. There has been a settlement here since Celtic times and the town also has the oldest pub in England called ‘Ye Olde Fighting Cocks’. Sir Walter Raleigh, who discovered the potato, stayed in the pub. Nowadays it is a popular filming location because of its character. The 2001 film Birthday Girl starring Nicole Kidman was partly filmed here as was the upcoming Incendiary starring Ewan McGregor, with scenes featuring the Norman Abbey and the Abbey Gateway. Rowan Atkinson’s Johnny English was also filmed here but the least said about that the better.
