Totton is situated on the edge of the New Forest, close to Southampton city centre. The New Forest covers a large amount of south Hampshire and has the largest tracts of pastureland, heath land and old growth in the South East. Originally a Royal Forest, commissioned by William the Conqueror, its first function was for the hunting of wild deer. Today, most of the area is still owned by the Crown and is protected under the 1877 New Forest Act. The Park is also home to a wide range of large cattle, pigs and ponies, while also sustaining rare wildlife, insects, plants and mosses, attracting wildlife enthusiasts from all over the country.
