Bitterne is a suburb of Southampton although it was a separate village until the 1900's. Many people believe that its name comes from the bird called a 'Bittern' but it is actually named after a bend in the River Itchen, which is famed for its otters, white-clawed crayfish and the weird jawless fish called brook lamprey. Nearby is Bitterne Manor, which was the site of the Roman settlement, Clausentum, the ancient forerunner to what is now Southampton. In the 50's Bitterne underwent extensive renovations and many of the Victorian Cottages were levelled to make way for the new modern houses. Luckily the original village church is still standing and is very much in use to this day.
