West of London, east of Reading, Slough has the most ethnically diverse population in England besides the capital. It all began back in the Great Depression of the ‘30’s when the Welsh walked up the Great West Road to find employment here. After the war people kept arriving, as many people from the Commonwealth gravitated to the town. There were also Polish refugee camps outside of the town in the early ‘50’s many of whom decided to stay. The town proudly elected it first black mayor, Lydia Simmons, in 1984. All of this makes for a vibrant and lively town and, with the building of its new state-of-the-art town centre (due for completion in 2011) things are looking even brighter.
