Sligo, capital of County Sligo, is the second largest urban area in Connacht; the first being Galway. The name Sligo comes from the Irish Sligeach, meaning 'shelly place', in reference to the huge amount of shellfish to be found in the nearby River Garavogue and estuary. Sligo is also home to the Sligo Institute of Technology, which only has slightly less students than its Dublin counterpart, the Dublin Institute of Technology. Three of the original five members of boy band Westlife were born and raised in the town of Sligo, as were famous Irish poet and Nobel Prize winner W.B Yeats and film director Neil Jordan, who directed The Crying Game and Interview with a Vampire.
