The Isle of Stepney is separated from Kent by a channel called the Swale and off the Swale is a creek. It is near this creek that the industrial town of Sittingbourne sits. Underneath the town is small stream called the Bourne, upon which the town also sits – literally Sitting-on-the-Bourne. Sittingbourne has actually been a ‘sitting’ or resting place since the Middle Ages, when it was used as a stopover for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. King Henry V ‘sat’ in the local Red Lion public house on his way back from battle and Queen Victoria stayed at the old Rose Inn. Today Sittingbourne has a thriving fruit preserving and packing industry. It is also the largest producer of newsprint in the world.
