Wadsley Bridge was named after High Bridge near the eastern end of the Sheffield Wednesday ground. The club itself started life in 1820 as The Wednesday Cricket Club, after the day of the week they played their matches on. In 1867 the team started to play football in the winter to keep fit. In time the cricket club folded but the football club turned professional in 1887. By the beginning of the 20th century the club needed a new ground. They brought some land in the village of Owlerton where they built the Hillsborough Stadium. A player presented the team with an owl mascot and the team became known as “The Owls”.
