Chesterfield Road in Sheffield starts at Toll Bar Bridge on the Meers Brook. Along with the River Sheaf it formed the boundary between the ancient Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia. Nearby at the southern entrance to Meersbrook Park is one of Sheffield’s oldest buildings, the half-timbered Bishops' House. Built around 1500 for brothers John and Geoffrey Blythe (who became Bishops) records show that William Blythe, a farmer and scythe manufacturer, was living there in 1627. He ran the Blythe Wheel, where Rushdale Terrace is now, to grind corn and as a sharpening grinding wheel. Famous sons of the city include Michael Palin, Arctic Monkey Alex Turner and Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker.
