Famous for its footwear, Rushden started its shoe making business in small workshops. Mechanisation in the mid 19th century turned it into a highly successful industry with over a hundred factories. Now only a few remain including Sanders and Sanders, who have been making boots for the British Army since 1873. The streets of Rushden spread across a valley, the magnificent spire of St Mary’s Church rising above them. The name Rushden comes from the name “rushy valley”. The River Nene flows to the north of the town on its way to the Wash, whilst Sidney Brook babbles through the town centre. Famous residents include Darling Buds Of May author H.E Bates, who used Rushden as the setting for his novel Love For Lydia.
