At the turn of the 16th century Rotherham was a fashionable college town. The Rotherham-born Archbishop of York, Thomas Rotherham, set up The College of Jesus to rival the colleges of Cambridge and Oxford. Before the century was out Edward VI shut it down and stripped its assets. Instead Rotherham became known for the strength of its iron and steel, its foundries produced cannons for H.M.S. Victory and cast iron armour plating for Brunel's SS Great Eastern. Today the Corus Engineering Steels plant in Rotherham produces steel for Renault Formula 1 cars and the new Airbus A380 "super jumbo". Famous Rotherham notables include former England and Arsenal goalie David Seaman and politician William Hague.
