Reading in Berkshire has a thriving arts scene. 2006 saw the start of the now annual Reading Fringe Festival where local arts groups and individuals promote themselves on the run up to the phenomenal Reading Festival. Reading Festival itself, run by Festival Republic, is one of the world’s oldest popular music festivals with its origins in the National Jazz Festival started in 1964. In the 70’s the festival began to mutate into a hard rock festival with the likes of Hawkwind and Thin Lizzy attending. In 1992 Nirvana played at Reading and Kurt Cobain was famously wheeled on stage in a wheelchair to parody speculation about his health; he also announced the birth of his daughter during the gig.
