Pontypridd is about 12 miles from Cardiff, South Wales. The community is the second largest in Wales and its name means ‘bridge by the earthen house’. Closely tied to the coal and iron industries, the town is also home to the Pontypridd Rugby Football Club and is used as location for Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood. Many famous people hail from the area including Tom Jones, who was born in the local village of Trefforest. World champion boxer Freddie Welsh, the band Lost Prophets, and “Philthy” Phil Campbell, guitarist with Motörhead, are all from the area.
