Five miles north of Oxford, between the River Cherwell and the Oxford Canal, lies the large village of Kidlington. In fact Kidlington is so large that it is perhaps the largest village in England and so far it has resisted all proposals to become a town. In Kidlington you will often hear the peal of eight bells from the local St Mary the Virgin Church, which has a fine stained glass Tudor rectory with a large spire known as Our Lady’s Needle. The church was built in 1220 although there is evidence of an earlier church, from 1073, on the grounds as well as the remains of a three-sided Roman moat and causeway.
