In the Victorian era, much of the land around West Bridgford was owned by a family called the Musters, which prevented a great deal of development for some time. Eventually, the land was sold and West Bridgford prospered. Now, the town is known for its heritage in sport, notably football, cricket and water sports. Nottingham Forest Football club has its home at the City Ground near the banks of the River Trent and met with a great deal of success under its famous former manager, the late Brain Clough.
