Newton Abbot is a market town in Devon, England. Nestled on the banks of the beautiful River Teign, it is perhaps most famous for its horse racing. Another part of Newton Abbot’s heritage is the annual Cheese and Onion Fayre, which takes place in early September in honour of Saint Leonard who also lends his name to the ancient 13th century tower in the town centre. Over the years Newton Abbot has been known for its market, its wool and leather, its clay and more recently its railway. In fact it was the South Devon Railway locomotive works that lead to the town’s rapid expansion in the Victorian era.
