Set on the River Kennet and the Kennet & Avon Canal, Newbury is an historic town with many 17th century buildings. The town is famous both for its racecourse and for the airbase nearby. It is also the site of controversial environmentalist campaign ‘The Third Battle of Newbury’ where campaigners opposed the building of the Newbury bypass. In the 16th century, Jack of Newbury was wagered that he couldn’t gather wool from a sheep in the morning and make a suit by the evening. Surprisingly he managed and the tale is a nice metaphor for the town’s economic beginnings in the cloth trade. Michael Bond, creator of Paddington Bear, was born here.
