Here are three historic Musselburgh facts to amaze your friends: The town could be Scotland's oldest as the area was first settled by the Romans in around AD80. They built a fort near the mouth of the River Esk and bridged the river in what later became the town of Musselburgh. Musselburgh Racecourse is the oldest in Scotland and has been a venue for racing since 1816. Race meetings were originally held on Leith sands. The golf course at Musselburgh Links dates back to 1672, making it the oldest surviving golf club in the world. It also hosted the first Open Golf Championship and hosted it a further six times between 1874 and 1889.
