In County Westmeath is the town Mullingar which is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Meath. The name Mullingar comes from the Irish 'An Muileann gCearr' meaning 'the left-handed mill' although its original name was 'Maelblatha'. Nearby are two famous lakes, Lough Owel and Lough Ennel, both of which attract shoals of anglers every year. Also nearby is Lough Derravaragh, famous for the legend of the Children of Lir, four children of King Lir who were turned into swans. More recently Mullingar has become popular for its much sought-after pewter ware, with the Mullingar Pewter Company exporting worldwide.
