Sale has many recreational water resources, the most famous is the Bridgewater Canal running through the centre of the town. The money for building the canal was put up by the Duke of Bridgewater, who wanted it to take coal from his mines in Worsley to the mouth of the River Mersey. Opened in 1761 the canal was a great success and also convenient for the early Manchester commuter who could catch the ‘swift packet’ into town. These days the only swift traffic on the canal is the Trafford Rowing Club and Manchester University Boat Club. Next to the Bridgewater Canal, opposite the Metrolink Station is the Waterside Arts Centre with the Robert Bolt Theatre, galleries, studios and workshop spaces.
