Eccles is steeped in railway history, locomotives made at the Bridgewater Foundry in Patricroft were exported around the world. Eccles was on George Stephenson's Liverpool to Manchester line, the world's first railway for paying passengers. Its opening day in 1830 was tinged with tragedy when, during a stop at Parkside to take on water, Stephenson’s Rocket collided with Liverpool MP William Huskisson’s leg, he was chatting to the Duke of Wellington at the time. Local cricketer Michael Vaughan has some Eccles cricketers of 1861 to thank for improving the game. During a match an umpire put on a white coat so the batsman could see the flight of the ball better, a practice that continues today.
