Lucan lies at the meeting of two rivers, the River Liffey and River Griffeen; the name of the town comes from the Irish Leamhcan. On the site of Sarsfield's Castle is the grand Lucan House, which was built around 1770 and has a unique circular dining room, said to have been the inspiration for the White House's Oval Office. On the grounds of this house is a sulphuric spa, which attracted many people in the past to its supposedly healing waters.
