In medieval times West End, as the area was then known as, was a poor hamlet sandwiched between Hampstead and Kilburn. In the early 18th century many West End residents found employment serving in the grand houses in Hampstead, as it became an increasingly popular place for wealthy Londoners. In 1829 Finchley Road was built, connecting central London with the Great North Road, and the railway came in the 1850s. The area experienced a population explosion from 8,000 in 1881 to 30,000 in 1901 and picked up a new name – West Hampstead. In the 1960s planners wanted to extend the M1 to a new terminus at West Hampstead, which would have resulted in demolition of large areas of West Hampstead and Kilburn.
