Southgate is in north London in the Borough of Enfield. Originally the area was the 'south gate' of the King's hunting ground of Enfield Chase. Some of the street names, such as Chase Road and Chase Side, show this connection. There are many pubs in the area and some have been here for hundreds of years, for example 'Ye Old Cherry Tree' and 'The Crown', on Chase Side. Apparently 'The Crown' was the 18th century home of a retriever puppy that could perform tricks better than any dog in England. Amy Winehouse, the award-winning jazz singer, and Rachel Stevens, from S Club 7, were born and went to school here.
