Islington originally grew from a sprawling village and some parts of the area were developed in Georgian times. Douglas Adams lived in area and named one of the characters in the hilarious classic Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy after local estate agents Hotblack Desiato, a suitably alien sounding name. In best selling novel Neverwhere, by critically acclaimed novelist Neil Gaiman, one of the characters is an angel named Islington after the tube station. Two films have also been set in the area: the 2002 film About a Boy starring Hugh Grant and 2006 movie Notes On A Scandal with Judy Dench and Cate Blanchett. Nick Hornby, who wrote the About a Boy novel, also set SLAM in Islington.
