Some believe that Holloway Road is named simply after a ditch, or hollow, in the road whereas others more romantically say the ‘hollow’ derives from ‘hallow’ referring to its history as a pilgrim trail to Willingham. Either way it is one of London’s most important shopping centres and home to the London Metropolitan University, the National Student Union offices and the headquarters for the CND. Further down the street there is a roundabout where a few buildings sit, including the Archway Tavern, which appears on the cover of the 1971 Kinks album ‘Muswell Hillbillies’. John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) claims to have been born on one of the side streets here.
