The ancient parish of Hillingdon has given us some leading lights in the world of music and sport. Footballer Ray Wilkins, who played for Chelsea, Manchester United and QPR in his time, was born here. Ray had some unfortunate nicknames (e.g. ‘The Crab’, ‘Squareball Wilkins’) because of his tendency to pass sideways rather than up the pitch. In a similar league rock guitarist Ronnie Wood, from band The Rolling Stones, was also born here. Apart from being an amazing guitarist Wood has also collaborated on three books. One of them, called simply The Works, is autobiographical and contains his own artwork.
