Hendon has been a human settlement since at least Roman times. The word ‘Hendon’ evolved from ‘Hendun’, which means simply ‘on the high hill’ and Hendon has certainly always been a high flier. In the late 19th century there was a strong manufacturing industry here, mainly in motoring and aviation. Here you will find an RAF Museum on the site of what used to be the Hendon Hippodrome. This Hippodrome was extremely important to the RAF during the Second World War and also made some now common innovations; here airmail was first tested, as was the first parachute jump from an aircraft, the first flights undertaken at night, and even the first aerial protection of a city.
