Gidea Park is in East London right next door to Romford and close to the Romford Garden Suburb, a housing estate with a difference. Between 1910 and 1911 many small cottages and houses were designed here by over 100 architects all aiming to win a Government prize. The aim was to create the best town-planning scheme and to design the most cost effective housing possible. The style, or theme, of the Garden Suburb was ‘arts and crafts’. Some of these houses are now listed buildings and much sought after because of their history. Architect Berthold Lubetkin, who also designed the penguin pool at the London Zoo, designed one of the listed buildings.
