In the north of London, in the Borough of Enfield, and between Turkey Street and Carterhatch Lane, is the place known as Enfield Wash. In the past Enfield Wash was quaintly called Horsepoolstones. It is located on either side of Hertford Road and to the east, on the banks of the River Lea, is Enfield Lock. The lock was instrumental in the development of the area and Enfield Wash owes its existence to it. In 1812 a very important rifle factory was built here and the lock was built to help to conserve the river’s waters. The rifle factory, later known as the Royal Small Arms Factory, existed until the late 1980s and the site is now the ultra-modern housing development known as Enfield Island Village.
