Originally known as Newington, Elephant and Castle has been populated since medieval times and formed a mostly rural part of Surrey. There are now two major roundabouts and on the northern most one is an unusually large stainless steel sculpture, in the shape of a box, built in memory of Victorian chemist and physician Michael Faraday. Faraday was most famous for his research on electromagnetism and electrochemistry. Charlie Chaplin was born nearby as was Oscar winning actor Michael Caine. More recently controversial musician Richard David James, better known as Aphex Twin, famous for his intelligent dance music, took up residence in the converted bank area.
