With its two streams, Edgware Brook and Deans Brook, Edgware is in the north London Borough of Barnet. Originally it was an ancient parish of Middlesex and the word Edgware comes from the Saxon meaning Ecgi’s Weir. The weir was a pond nearby where Ecgi and his mates would go fishing for their supper. Edgware is well known for its Jewish population, so much so that the Jewish community have created an Eruv, or symbolic boundary, around the area allowing them to carry otherwise forbidden possessions from their home on the Shabbat. Singer George Michael was born here and composer George Frideric Handel was inspired to write The Harmonious Blacksmith by the sound of a local anvil while he lived here.
