In 967AD Saxon Edgar the Peaceful gave the land Dilwihs, meaning ‘meadow where the dill grows’, to a thane named Earl Aelfheah. By 1340, when the hamlet was sold to a John Leverich, the name had mutated to the more recognisable Est Dilewissh. Gradually Est Dulewissh changed to East Dulwich, now a district in the London Borough of Southwark. Nowadays Dulwich is a thriving residential area with an expansive shopping centre. There is a popular market held here on Fridays and Saturdays in Lordship Lane, a well-known ancient thoroughfare where you will find a listed 19th century house called The Concrete House, believed to be the oldest surviving example of its kind in England.
