There used to be a pub called ‘The Whalebone’ in Chadwell Heath because two whale’s jawbones were set up in the form of an archway over the road. The bones came from a whale that was stranded in the Thames during a great storm in 1658. During the 18th century, the heath was the haunt of highwaymen, including Dick Turpin. Eva Hart MBE, who died in Chadwell Heath in 1996, was one of the last remaining survivors from the Titanic. The Titanic went down on April 15, 1912 – Eva was only seven. It is believed that much of Kate Winslett’s character, Rose DeWitt Bukater, in the film was based on Eva Hart.
