Limerick is in the county of Limerick, in the Province of Munster, and part of the Cork-Limerick-Galway corridor which has a total population of around 1 million people. Although originally a Viking settlement, the city was redesigned in the 12th century by Norman invaders. It was the Normans who added many of the city’s most recognisable architectural features including King John's Castle and St Mary's Cathedral. The city also played a very important role in the 17th century civil wars when it was besieged - first by Oliver Cromwell and then by the Williamites. Famous TV presenter Terry Wogan was born in Limerick, as was Dolores O'Riordan of the band The Cranberries.
