Leyland was at the centre of the ‘Lailand Hundred’ in Saxon times and the town’s ancient cross is believed to date from then. In 1896 the town launched a company called the Lancashire Steam Motor Company, which later became better known as Leyland Motors. Between the 1950s and 1970s the firm expanded to become the massive company British Leyland (BL). Although BL was progressively broken up in the 1980s, the truck building side, now run by American firm PACCAR, is still a primary employer in the town. In April 2008 the company celebrated the production of the 300,000th truck from their factory in Leyland.
