Letterkenny, on the banks of the River Swilly, is considered to be one of Ireland's fastest growing towns – it’s grown so big that one bookmaker is offering odds of 66/1 that it will be upgraded to a city in 2015. The name comes from the Irish 'Leitirceanainn' meaning 'Hillside of the O'Cannons'. The O'Cannons were the last of the ancient chieftains of Tir Conaill, said to be the descendants of two renowned Irish kings, 'Conn of the Hundred Battles' and 'Naill of the Nine Hostages'. Despite giving the town their name there is no evidence that the O'Cannons lived in the area. Letterkenny was also an important market town with a market dating back to at least the 17th century. It was also the first crossing point over the River Swilly.
