Letchworth, or to give it its full name Letchworth Garden City, was one of the first ‘new towns’ of England and was the world’s first ‘Garden City’. The town was founded in 1903 by the prominent urban planner Ebenezer Howard who came up with the idea for towns of limited size, which would have easy access to greenbelt areas in order to assist in the general wellbeing of communities. Howard was also the inventor of the ‘universal language’ Esperanto. Perhaps it was Howard’s revolutionary urban design ideas that inspired Letchworth-born scientist James Lovelock to come up the Gaia Hypothesis, which proposes that the Earth as a whole is similar to a living organism.
