Before the Industrial Revolution, Leigh was famed for its dairy industry and the production of Lancashire cheese - reputed to be the best toasting cheese in the world. In the 18th and 19th centuries Leigh became a thriving textile town with at least a dozen mills in the area making silk and rope as well as cloth. Around the same time coal mining became a major employer and remained so up until the mid-1990s. Parsonage Colliery was one of the deepest mines in Europe going down to over 3,000ft. Leigh also has a great sporting heritage with thriving rugby league, rugby union, football, cricket and athletic clubs - and Leigh Sports Village will be the envy of neighbouring towns.
