The name Horsforth means ‘horse ford’ which refers to a river crossing situated somewhere in shallow water along the River Aire. The ford was probably used for the transportation of woollen goods to and from Pudsey, Shipley and Bradford. Until the mid-19th century Horsforth was a small agricultural community but it expanded rapidly with the growth of Leeds and the expansion of the local stone quarries. Not only did Horsforth’s quarries supply Kirkstall Abbey with building materials and millstones in the medieval period, they also provided the stone for Scarborough seafront and prized sandstone was sent from the Golden Bank Quarry as far afield as Egypt.
