Crossgates, which means " crossroads ", is popular with shoppers as an alternative to Leeds City Centre. Did you know that Penda's Way, Penda’s Walk and Penda’s Grove were built and owned in the 1940s by one of Britain's first women builders, Gertrude Bray? When she was doing some local history research, she uncovered a legend of a king from the Dark Ages who was supposed to have died at a battle in the area, King Penda of Mercia. This gave her the idea to name the streets after Penda. But the first residents were not so amused when they discovered that this King Penda was a bloodthirsty heathen, who worshipped the pagan god Woden and who believed that after death he would enter Valhalla, the hall of Heroes.
