Lancaster is situated in the North West on the River Lune and is both a cultural and educational centre for the area. Lancaster Castle is well known as the site of the Pendle Witch Trials in 1612. It features a beautiful Norman keep and survived attacks by Robert the Bruce and many more in the English Civil War. The Priory (or St Mary’s Church) is located just off the Castle. Inside, it features carved oak choir stalls, which are said to be the third oldest in England, dating from around 1340. The sundial was restored in 1894 and is now listed Grade II.
