Knaphill lies to the east of Woking with a population of around 8,500. To the south of the village, the Basingstoke Canal has been running since 1794. It was built to connect Basingstoke to the Thames at Weybridge and has been recently restored. Historically, one of its main cargos was timber, but use of the canal has now been restricted since it became a Site of Specific Interest. Features of the area include the many World War 2 bunkers, built in anticipation of an invasion. Dating from 1207, the ruined Odiham Castle sits at the end of the canal. It was built by King John as one of his strongholds lying between Windsor and Winchester.
