In the heart of The Weald in Surrey, Horley has stood on these once forested and marshy lands for hundreds of years. During the Saxon times the Manor of Horley was controlled by the monks at the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter, from the neighbouring town of Chertsey although in 1539, when all Catholic monasteries were closed, Henry VIII took control. Nearby is the inspirational, and sweetly named, River Mole, which ambles through the Surrey countryside, to the River Thames, just outside of Hampton Court. Contrary to what you may think the river isn’t named after the near-blind rodent-like creature but is derived from the Latin ‘mola’ which means ‘mill’.
